Steaming at home - a sovereign women's health practice

Anyone can steam at home! When it comes to gathering your things, choosing your spot, and setting up your space, it may seem like a bit of a who-ha at the start. When these have been sorted out, the foundation is laid & you can devote time to yourself. Here are the supplies you will already have in your kitchen & living room (most likely).

 

  • Bowl or a pot made of either ceramic, stainless steel (uncoated) or glass.

  • Filtered water or spring water (our choice) depending on your vessel 500ml - 1 litre will be plenty.

  • The cushions are for your knees, arms, and hips. You want to be comfortable, so use as many as necessary.

  • Books. These prop the steam vessel to the appropriate height for your setup. 1 - 3 sturdy books should do it, just don't make an Eifel Tower out of books and top it with hot herbs - ouch!

 

Extra bits & bobs that make the experience extra lush include;

  • Warm cosy socks

  • Candles

  • Incense

  • Tea

  • Gentle music

  • Throw or blanket

  • Put away devices such as phones, TV's, laptops, work, kids, or any other distractions - make this a deeply personal experience. This practice has many added benefits when we respect the ancient roots of the ritual & explore within. Our bodies will tell us a story.

Now to prepare your Yoni Steam water & herbs;

  • Measure herb dosage (back of your packet) and place in your cooking pot.

  • Pour 500ml - 1litre of filtered/spring water into the same pot as your herbs and bring to a boil.

  • Once your herbs have come to a boil, simmer for 5 - 10 minutes, depending on your herbal formula (each of our practitioner-formulated blends has a dosage & cook time). Once you have correctly prepared your herbs, leave them to cool with a lid on to preserve all of the potency. Cooling down time varies from person to person anywhere from 3 - 10 minutes. Each person has their own preference as to the temperature of their steam.

  • Next is to set yourself up on the floor with your cushions under your knees, a towel around your steam vessel, kneel down on your cushions legs comfortably apart and either sit upright or enter a supported child's pose.

  • Enjoy the healing elixir you created for your body and imagine your Yoni breathing this in and dispersing it throughout your entire womb.

*Note regarding the temperature. You will notice the temperature immediately if it becomes too hot, stand up and sit back down every 10 seconds. There's no right or wrong temperature here. In this case, it's mild steam since there is no heating element to maintain the heat (traditional steam). Just be careful not to burn yourself and keep warm.*

 **Remember that for your first-time steam, you must only steam for 10 minutes - this is to allow the body to adjust to new sensations as well as to begin the detox process in a gentle manner.
